Platypus Ambassadors And Their Caretakers

Jason and "The Platypus"

When we first heard about a Platypus Ambassador lost in Mexico, we were very concerned.    After reading Jason's reply to our request for more info, we realized that, in true Platypus style, that the Ambassador had decided to strike out on his own.  We wish him luck.  Any info on on his whereabouts and the identity of the new caretaker should be sent to the Temple of the Platypus at [email protected].    We also wish Jason luck in his quest to find another platypus . Here is the story:

Here's what happened...We have a lobster and a platypus, named "the lobster" and "the platypus" respectively.  I went to LA on business bringing the platypus with and leaving the lobster behind (with an Orca and a dog to keep company).   The platypus comfortably hung out with me in LA for two whole weeks no problem.

My girlfriend met me in LA at the end of my second week and we drove to the tiny fishing village of Bocana de Santo Tomas which is about an hour and a half drive south of Ensenada Mexico (Northern Baja-check it out on a map). This village was so out of the way, we had to drive for an hour off the main road on a dirt road through cow country and a beautiful canyon.  At the end of the road was this tiny village with only about a dozen houses and some trailers for summer vacationers.  We rented a cottage from a local for a few dollars and could hear the surf crashing the whole night (the whole village is on a sloping bluff looking out over the ocean (where there were dolphins frolicking I might add)).  The woman who normally makes food for visitors was away for the week so we had to subsist on two rice cakes and a werthers caramel.  They shut off the power generator at 9:30 so all we had was a maglight and a candle (but no matches).  At this point, I asked my girlfriend if I should take out the Platypus and bring him to bed, she said yes, and we all fell asleep comfortably.

Next morning we packed up and hightailed it to the main road in search of some breakfast which we found at a local bar/restaurant which had the best steak and eggs ranchero style I've ever had.  As we we're driving back to Ensenada we suddenly realized what happened....the worst...the platypus was back in the bed in the tiny fishing village.   Should we go back?  It wasn't an easy decision..We were driving a rented car which at this point was covered completely with mud and had god knows what other kind of damage due to the rocks which littered the road leading to the village.  The drive is
a treacherous hourlong oddysey around blind curves and through huge puddles.  We decided we would write to the man who rented us the cottages (his name was Romulo Gomez N. E Hijos-we had his business card) and ask him to send us the platypus postage paid.   This decision did not come easily and there was about two hours of sad maudlin mourning and fear as we continued to drive north, away from the platypus.  To drive back at that point was just too much.  We would have to spend at least three hours of tough driving just to get our little friend back.  We finally accepted the wisdom of our decision and rested ok knowing we would try our best to get him back.

Well, as it happens, we never wrote to Romulo..why?  well at first the initial shock of leaving the platypus alone in that room was too much to bear.  As time went by we realized he did have this orphaned puppy who was wandering around the village to keep him company.  Then as a little more time passed, we realized the platypus was probably having the time of his life and for all we know he might be brightening the life of some kid who spent his easter holiday there.  For all we know we may see him again someday in very different circumstances.  Now it is as if a piece of our hearts forever abides in that beautiful place on the other end of the continent.  The platypus is "holding down the fort" in our Mexican outpost..he is our foreign service emmisary.  Also, being a creature of cloth and silicone pellet, he has the ability to project his avatar into
any form he chooses, therefore we are looking to purchase another platypus who will be able to channel the being of the platypus who is in Mexico and in some ways give the platypus a dual nature- enable him to exist on two planes of existence.

That's my wierd story and I don't think I ever would have felt safe enough telling anyone this if I hadn't stumbled across your wierd and wonderful web page.

thanks again
